Anna Compton

March 28, 1930 — January 20, 2019

Anna Dean (Wood) Compton, 88 of Clifton passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 24, 2019 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Meridian Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Clifton Funeral Home.

Anna was born in Meridian on March 28, 1930 to Levi Franklin and Lola A. (Finstad) Wood. She attended schools in Meridian, Norse, Hico, and Clifton. In 1947, she graduated from Clifton High School. She then attended Clifton College until 1949. She was very active in the college choir and traveled to many different places performing and enjoying the camaraderie with college classmates.

On January 1, 1954, she married Phillip Etheredge in Clifton. To this union one son, Don Anthony (Tony) Etheredge was born.

Returning home to Clifton, Anna married Marcus L. Compton on October 9, 1959, making their home on the farm in Clifton. To this union two children were born, Marissa A. (Sissy) Compton and Mitchell Kirk Compton.

Anna worked during her early years as a bookkeeper and bank teller at Farmer’s State Bank in Clifton. She went on to be a sportswear business owner in downtown Clifton.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church in Clifton, Anna served in her devotion to the study of God’s word. She attended three other churches while living in different places in her lifetime. Those included First Baptist in Victory, TX, Abbeville, LA, and Meridian, TX.

She enjoyed several hobbies including, reading, writing letters to family and friends, playing scrabble and other table games. She was always a fair player showing no mercy to her much loved family members and friends.......she played to win!! She also enjoyed the water. Anna spent many summers at the “Mermaid” swimming pool, Meridian Creek, or traveling to Galveston Island. She truly was a beautiful mermaid.

Anna’s life was a testimony to her Lord. She was always kind to others and helpful to those in need. She was a loving and kind daughter, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lola Wood; baby sister, Doris June Wood; and son, Mitchell Kirk Compton.

She is survived by her children, Don Anthony (Tony) Etheredge and wife, Susan, Sissy Zander and husband, Robbie; grandchildren, Daniel Frank Etheredge, Amy Railsback and husband, Marcus, Jade Selman and husband, Brandon, Star Binkoski and husband, Brian, Michael Compton and wife, Alyssa; daughter-in-law, Lucy Compton; great-grandchildren, Mason and Brady Kyle Railsback, Evan, Conner, Chloe, Elin, and John Henry Selman, and baby Adlee Compton due in March.

Pallbearers will be Tony Etheredge, Michael Compton, Robbie Zander, Marcus Railsback, Brandon Selman, Brian Binkoski, and Gene Finstad.
