Capt. Clyde Herzog

Clyde Eugene Herzog passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Waco, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2023.  Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Clyde was born on October 23, 1946 in Meridian, Texas to Albert and Estelle Herzog.  Clyde was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law, Hazel Brown.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Lynda, son Matt and wife Emily and their daughter Savannah, daughter Marla, sister Joyce and her husband Raymond and their son Ricky, brother Al and his wife Brenda and their daughter Sherri and her husband Wes and their other daughter Terri, and many great nieces and nephews.

Clyde attended Meridian schools and graduated as salutatorian of his class in 1965.  He then attended Texas A&M University and was a military trainee of the corps of cadets.  He graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Clyde served 9 years in the military.  He joined the Air Force and began his jet pilot training at the Air Force Base in Laredo, Texas.  He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant upon graduation and was assigned to fly C-130 transport planes.  His base assignments included Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas and Scott Air Force Base in Fairview Heights, Illinois.  While at Forbes Air Force Base, he flew C-130 transport planes on extended rotations to Frankfurt, Germany, Incirlik, Turkey, Mildenhall, England, and support missions to Panama, South America, Bolivia, and Chili.

On November 1, 1969, Clyde was united in marriage to Lynda Claire Brown at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton, Texas.  While they were based at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas, they had two children, Matt and Marla.

In 1980, he was hired as a pilot for Ozark Airlines based in St. Louis, Missouri. Ozark was acquired by Trans World Airlines followed by an acquisition by American Airlines. Clyde logged in over 25,000 take offs and landings.

Clyde was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 40 years.  He served on several boards, councils, and also served as president.

He enjoyed working on the farm plowing and raising black Aberdeen Angus.  He also found pleasure in wood working projects. He delighted on taking the family on vacations.

When Clyde retired at age 60, he and Lynda built a log home on the farm he grew up on.  He utilized his civil engineering degree to accomplish this incredible feat.

Clyde led an exemplary Christian life. He had an easy-going manner about him with a dry sense of humor.  He was generous, loyal, adored, and loved by many.
