Don Metcalfe

Donald Metcalfe passed from this life to his eternal home in heaven on Friday, April 8, 2022 surrounded by his wife and children. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, 2022 at First Baptist Church, Clifton. Visitation will be held from 4:00-5:30 P.M. Sunday, April 10, 2022 at Clifton Funeral Home. The family will hold a private burial.

Don was born on October 25, 1934, in Austin, Texas to William Tracey and Vivian Tidwell Metcalfe. He graduated from Austin High School in 1952 before going on to Hardin Simmons University.  Don enjoyed a successful career in the Oil & Gas industry that spanned over sixty years. He held positions with Texaco, Pennzoil and Southwest Royalties, and he worked independently for the last 30 years. Don and his family moved to over fifteen Texas towns, with the most time being spent in Mexia, Midland and Clifton. As a lifelong Texas Baptist, Don served many years as Deacon and Sunday school teacher, and he blessed many with his wonderful singing voice. Don was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He married Mary Katherine Cooper on July 3, 1952 and together they raised 4 children: Donna, Mike, Beth and Joanne. Don and Mary Kay were married until her death in 2011. Later, Don reconnected with high school friend, Elizabeth Davis and they were married in Clifton, Texas on July 28, 2012.

Don was an honest, hardworking man. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and was the spiritual leader of his family. He was known for his good humor, generosity, positive attitude. He was a faithful friend and was loved and admired by many. Don enjoyed traveling with family and friends and played a mean game of 42.

He is survived by his wife, Liz Metcalfe, his four children, Donna Dailey and her husband Steve, Mike Metcalfe and his wife Donna, Beth Phelps and her husband George, Joanne Corley and her husband Mark, and stepsons Ron Bailey, and Frank Bailey and his wife Sofia; and by eleven grandchildren, Christopher Dailey and wife Ellen, Jess Dailey, Christina Montague and husband Jonathan, Curtis Metcalfe and wife Tiffany, Marsye Steele and husband Michael, Robert Metcalfe, Austin Phelps, Luke Phelps and wife Traci, Caleb Phelps, Amy Millar and husband Brandon, and Ashley Schober and husband Mike, as well as ten great-grandchildren.

While at home, Don was visited by friends and family, including brother-in-law Bobby Cooper and wife Yvette, and cousins George and Bobby Sanders from Austin.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Kay and his brother Roy Haliburton.

The family extends appreciation to the Hospice Team and Staff for the wonderful way you helped Don the last few days of his life.

In lieu of flowers donations can  be made to a charity of your choice or to First Baptist Church, Clifton.
