Donald "Cowboy" Mehrens

Donald Ray "Cowboy" Mehrens, 73, of Clifton passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Providence Hospice Place. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, January 18, 2019 at Clifton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Cowboy was born May 19, 1945 in Ft Worth, Tx to Jack and Edith Mehrens. In 1964, he graduated from Brenham High School. In the summer of 1964, Cowboy and his friend Dean Polk were sitting in a café in Livingston during the Polk County Youth Fair, Nancy Kainer walked in and said hello to Dean, and Cowboy insisted on meeting her. That is where it all began. On March 19, 1965, he and Nancy married in New Taiton, Tx.

Cowboy was an accomplished horseman raising numerous world champion horses in the cutting horse industry, he won numerous awards and saddles. He was a life member and very involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 50+ years. He also served Fort Bend County Fair and Youth Rodeo for many years and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Assn. and The National Cutting Horse Assn.

His employment starting with raising and training cutting horses with his dad, Jack Mehrens. He and his family owned Mehrens Feed in Rosenberg. Later he was employed with Massey Ferguson/ Twin City Tractor, Home Lumber, TSC, and Brand Western Wear. In 1984, he opened Cowboys Boot Shoe and Saddle Repair before moving on in 1999 to work for Fort Bend County Road and Bridge. In 2009, Cowboy and Nancy retired and moved to Clifton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Edith Mehrens; father and mother-in-law Milton and Regina Kainer; son-in-law, Teddy Vogler; brother-in-law, Alvin Mock; sister-in-law, Rita Kainer; and his niece, Stacie Mehrens.

Cowboy leaves behind his wife of 53 yrs, Nancy Kainer Mehrens of Clifton, Tx; children, D. Ray Mehrens and wife, Nicole of Guy, Tx, Dodie Mehrens Vogler and special friend, David Mikeska of Boling, Tx, Marion Mehrens of Clifton, Tx, Kristi Mehrens and husband, Dock Latiolais of Rosharon, Tx; grandchildren, Randy Vogler, Jack Mehrens and fiance, Jessica Goldgar, Ryan Vogler, Jessica Mehrens Durban and husband, Donald, Rusty Vogler, Shyan Chancey and husband, Jonathan, Blane Mehrens and fiance, Ashley Carey, Charlie Mehrens and Cayson Healy; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Chancey and Delainey Durban; bonus grandchildren, Zack and Gary Smith, Rhena, Slate and Olivia Latiolais; twin Brother, Ronald "Tiny" Mehrens and wife, Janie; sister, Jackie Mehrens Powell and husband, Larry Joe; brother-in-law, Bennie Kainer and wife, Melanie; sisters-in-law, Margaret Kainer Mock, Barbara Kainer Green and husband, Don; and numerous Nieces and nephews.
