Edwin Paul Conrad, 96, of Clifton passed away Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Lutheran Sunset Ministries. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.M. Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Zion United Church at Womack. Burial will follow at Clifton Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 12:00-1:00 P.M.

Edwin was born on March 17, 1923 in the Womack community to Paul and Minna (Pietzsch) Conrad. He was baptized on May 6, 1923 by Rev. Theo Pfundt at the Evangelical & Reformed Church (now Zion United Church) in Womack. He was confirmed by Rev. Herbert Baur on March 21, 1937 at Zion United Church. His confirmation verse was Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help”. Edwin attended Womack schools and graduated from Clifton High School in 1941. He attended Clifton Junior College.

Edwin served in the U. S. Air Force (Army Air Corp) during World War II from May 7, 1941 until October 9, 1945 as a Flight Engineer, serving in the Theater of Operations in Europe as Technical Sergeant. He was very proud to have served his country. He documented his service by writing his story having it published in the Bosque County Armed Forces Veterans and most recently the Hermann Sons Life newspaper.

On returning from the war, Edwin married Mildred Hampe on November 5, 1947, at Zion United Church in Womack. To this union were born three children, James Edwin, Janie Louise, and Sandra Lee who died at birth. They were married 72 years, 1 month, and 3 days.

Edwin was a life long member of Zion United Church, active in all organizations, served on the Church Council a number of times as President and Treasurer. He
served as Brotherhood President and also Sunday School Teacher. In his later years, he gave a lot of his time to keeping the church lawn, having much pride in doing so.

Edwin retired from Wilson Building Material Co. on March 17, 1986 after 29 years.

He was very active in Hermann Sons. He was an agent for 21 years and served on the Laws Committee for many years. He and Mildred were instrumental in starting the Annual Fish Fry benefitting the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department through the “Helping Hands” program of the Hermann Sons Life. Edwin received his 70-year pin in October of this year. One of Edwin’s main interests was the Veterans of Foreign War Post #8553 in Clifton. He served as Quartermaster for 21 years ending in 2008, and gave many hours of volunteer work. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #322, serving as Commander and Quartermaster.

His hobbies were ranching, fishing, and after retirement, traveling. He and Mildred enjoyed many trips together. Edwin was a caring person and enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He was so proud of their achievements.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, Minna and Paul Conrad; his siblings, Olivia Walsleben, Eldor Conrad, Talita McGinnis, Takla Borah, Lenora Ender, and Joseph Conrad.

Edwin is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mildred; son, Jim Conrad and wife Paula; daughter, Janie Johnson and husband Ridge; grandchildren, Whitney Villegas and husband Justin, Bill Conrad, Austin Conrad, Jonathan Conrad; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Camden Villegas; and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Bill Conrad, Austin Conrad, Jonathan Conrad, Justin Villegas, Larry Schulze, and Scott Conrad

The family would like to thank the staff of Lutheran Sunset Ministries and Dr. Kyle Phillips and staff for their loving care.
