Eleanora Lucia Wunderlich Zuehlke, 93, of Clifton passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, at Goodall-Witcher Nursing Facility surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 25, 2018, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Clifton Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Clifton Funeral Home.
Eleanora was born on August 4, 1924, at home on the family farm in Austin County near Brenham, TX. Her parents, Rudolf and Emma (Dierking) Wunderlich had three other children, Ruby, Gladys, and Pearlie. Eleanora was baptized on November 9, 1924, by Pastor H.A. Heineke in the Lutheran St. Jakobi Church in New Wehdem, Austin County, TX.
Being raised on the Austin County farm, Eleanora attended primary school in the area. She attended Brenham High School, graduating in 1940 at 16 years of age. She went on to Blinn College in Brenham, graduating in 1942 with a teaching certificate. She taught school for five years in the Texas counties of Washington and Bosque.
In 1942, while visiting her sister Gladys in Womack, she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Herbert Zuehlke. They married on June 27, 1944, in St. James Lutheran Church in New Wedhem near Brenham. Eleanora and Bill had one child, Dennis William. In 1950, they bought a farm near the community of Womack. Eleanora resided there until her death. In addition to farming, she worked at Walls Mfg. from 1955-1970. At that point, she became a full-time homemaker and farmer.
Life as a homemaker was filled with caring for Bill, an extensive garden, various chickens, cats, and Daisy the dog. She was an active member of St. Paul’s and Trinity Lutheran Churches, freely volunteering her time and talents of baking and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolf and Emma Wunderlich; three sisters, Ruby Stein, Gladys Boecker, and Pearlie Boecker; and her husband of 67 years, William “Bill” Herbert Zuehlke.
Survivors include her son, Dennis and his wife, Debby of Lubbock; granddaughter, Alycia and her husband, Matthew Sears of Garland; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
