Fred William Spanabel

November 26, 1920 — October 27, 2017

Fred W. Spanabel, 96, of Clifton passed away Friday, October 27, 2017, at his residence. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Clifton. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 P.M. Monday, October 30, 2017, at Clifton Funeral Home.

On November 26, 1920, Fred was born in Walnut Springs to Fred and Freda (Bethel) Spanabel. He grew up and graduated high school in Walnut Springs and attended college in Silver City, NM. During World War II, he served in the Navy in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor after the Japanese attack. On September 3, 1947, he married Felicia Kelly in Silver City. Working construction in the oil field, Fred operated heavy equipment and in the last few years of his career, was an inspector for Amoco Oil.

Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was very interested in Indian artifacts and enjoyed flint knapping (making arrowheads), and making bows. Some of his collection, which he donated to the city library, is on display at the local museum. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Holy Angels Catholic Church. Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Lillian Davis.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years, Kelly Spanabel of Clifton; son, Jim Spanabel and wife, Sharon, of Houston; sisters-in-law, Esther Armijo of San Diego and Rosie Sanchez of Los Angeles; niece, Lana Everett of Alamagordo; and nephew Rob Davis of Phoenix.
