Glendale Jones

April 6, 1928 — October 20, 2023

Clifton

On October 20, 2023 Glendale Jones, age 95, entered his eternal home in heaven.

Glendale was born on April 6, 1928 in Dilley, Texas to Charles John and Harriet Ealand Jones. He was the youngest of 6 children. Hard work ethic was something Glendale learned early on and carried with him throughout his life. His first job was spent milking cows and delivering bottles to local residents in Dilley. When he earned enough money, he purchased a bicycle and began a paper route to deliver newspapers. He graduated high school in 1944 at the age of 16. His father, Charles, worked for the railroad and prepared him for a career there by teaching him the Morse code. Soon after graduation, Glendale was hired as the youngest telegraph operator for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

After working for a few years, he attended college at South Texas State University where he studied accounting. Although he never graduated from college, he made sure his three children did. Among his other endeavors were running a movie theater and managing the Dilley Lumber Company. Glendale was very involved in his church and his community. While residing in Dilley, he served as city councilman , member of Lions Club (65+ years), member of the rodeo association, member and deacon of FBC and Masonic master mason for 70 +years. Glendale and Georgia moved to Clifton,TX in April,1999 to be nearer their daughter and son-in-law.

After moving to Clifton, he served as a deacon of First Baptist Church and continued his involvement at Lions Club where he was considered a lifetime member. Glendale was a faithful Christian and could be found most Sundays and Wednesdays at First Baptist Church attending services, prayer meetings, and other programs and activities hosted there. Glendale had a soft heart for the widow women of the church and would always make sure each had a small gift on their birthday or holiday. He also provided transportation for the elderly members of the church who were no longer able to drive or had no means of transportation. Family was extremely important to Glendale.

On December 31, 1949, he married Georgia Loetta Redus. This marriage was blessed by three children: Gary Alan, Greta Glenece, and Greg Torre. Once married, Glendale began his career at Redus Chevrolet and Pontiac dealership selling automobiles. During this time, he also managed Ealand ranch south of Dilley for his uncle, raising cross Brahman and Hereford cattle. Although his family was his first priority, he also loved flying and obtained a pilots license. In the winter months, he enjoyed hunting with his brothers-in-law and uncle in Colorado and Wyoming.

After retiring, his spare time was spent on the golf course with friends betting a penny each hole. He played golf recreationally until he lost his eyesight at the age of 91. He was an avid sports fan- following his beloved Texas Aggies and any sporting events his grandkids were involved in. Every Friday night you could find Georgia and Glendale “eating out” or sharing a meal with widow women of FBC.

Glendale was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and brother (Bea Downing, Martha Halloran, Mary Stone, Nelda Gwartney, and Beverly John. Survivors include his loving wife of 73 years, Georgia, son Gary and wife Terelea of Beeville, daughter Greta and husband Clinton of Clifton, and son Greg Jones of Jacksonville.
