Lewis was born December 29,1933 in Boliver County, Mississippi. Lewis was the only child born to his parents, Walter Jackson Humphreys and Willie Elizabeth Brown Humphreys. He grew up helping his parents make a living by farming the land. There was a combined family of six brothers and four sisters.
Lewis had little formal education, having dropped out of school at an early age due to serious illness. Through self-determination and constantly reading, he was able to qualify for a GED diploma as an adult. He was very proud of this accomplishment.
After years of struggle, Lewis left home at the age of sixteen and joined the Armed Services, serving his country honorably in the Korean Conflict. At the end of his tour of duty he came home to Huntington, Arkansas where his parents had moved at the time of their retirement.
In 1956 he moved to Dallas, Texas where he began his career in building maintenance at Mrs. Baird’s Bakery. In 1963 he began work at First National Bank of Dallas, though a series of mergers and name changes, he retired from NCNB of Texas in 1993 having completed twenty-eight years of services.
On October 5, 1957 he married Evelyn Prescher, his wife of 60 years. To this union three children were born: Perry, Janet and Roger.
Lewis was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was respected by all who knew him for his hard work, dedication and readiness to help. His Favorite pastime was fishing, and he spent many happy hours in his boat or just sitting on his dock at Lake Fork. He would like you to remember him as he fished half his life and wasted the rest. He also enjoyed hunting and was an excellent gardener, taking great pride in his yard and garden.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Thomas, Charles, Gale, Walter, Leroy and Joe; four sisters, Lillie Mae Fitts, Juil Alexander, Mattie Williams, Dolly Cromwell.
