Lloyd Hampe

May 18, 1948 — June 11, 2021

Clifton

On June 11, 2021, at the age of 73, Dr. Lloyd Hampe (Doc Hampe) was called home by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton. Burial will follow at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery at Norse.

Lloyd Wayne Hampe was born May 18, 1948 in the Cayote community. He was the oldest of three children born to Oscar Hampe and Jeweldine (Ickert) Hampe. He grew up on the family farm in Cayote, just outside of Clifton, where he continued to farm until his passing.

Lloyd was lovingly raised in the Christian faith.  He was baptized July 25, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Clifton.  As a young man he declared his love for Jesus and the church, and was confirmed on June 2, 1963, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clifton. Lloyd cultivated his faith through the years and grew to be a devout disciple to the Lord. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton, where he humbly and faithfully served as an Elder, President of the Congregation, and held various offices in the Men's Club.

In 1966, he graduated from Clifton High School as a member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Honors Society. Later that year he embarked on pursuit of higher education, attending Texas A&M University in College Station, where he focused on a career as a Veterinarian. Lloyd concluded his studies at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine, as a distinguished student, graduating with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine on August 6, 1971. Afterwards, he was stationed at Luke Air Force Base in Maricopa County, Arizona. As a Captain in the United States Air Force, he was assigned to the USAF Hospital, where he helped grow the Veterinary Practice, extending beyond clinical shots and piloting an equestrian clinic, to better support the service members and their families.

Succeeding his military service, Lloyd moved back to Clifton in 1973 to embark on his career as a Veterinarian, working alongside his mentor, Dr. Tom Browder at the Clifton Veterinary Clinic. In September of 1983 Lloyd purchased the vet clinic from Dr. Browder, continuing to grow the business with a faith-based and people-centered mindset.

On November 26, 1981, Lloyd married Donna Gale Aars at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton. Together they raised five children: Ryan Chris, Laura Marie, Shelley Gayle, Lisa Ann, and Travis Wayne. Lloyd and Donna celebrated 39 years of marriage.

One of Lloyd’s proudest achievements was his many years of service to The Central Texas Youth Fair. In the summer of 2020, The Central Texas Youth Fair named Dr. Lloyd Hampe and Donna Hampe as honorees of the fair. During his time with the Fair, he observed a complete overhaul of the facilities and served as Superintendent of the Records/Quiz Class. Dr. Hampe created the Records/Quiz Class after he saw many kids who knew a lot about their projects but were unable to buy expensive show animals that would bring them top prizes. This allowed the Exhibitor’s knowledge of their project to be recognized rather than just the market-ready quality of the animal.

To his family, Lloyd will be remembered for his strong faith, compassion and devotion to each of them.  He will also be remembered for his generosity, for being soft spoken, calm and intentional with each word, fair in his delivery, and his commitment to the community. His colleagues will remember him for his level-headed reasoning, empathetic nature, and desire to help. Those who reflect on his years in Veterinary school  will reminisce about him being a true gentleman, an encourager, having a dry sense of humor, and brewing a mean cup of coffee.

He enjoyed farming the land, gardening, and working with his cattle.  At times, when the church called for him to deliver a sermon for an absent pastor, he could be found delivering the first service to his cattle. Lloyd loved spending time with his grandchildren and some of his best moments were driving them around the farm in his ATV, taking them fishing, and checking the cows.

In October of 2020, Lloyd was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease. After suffering from a stroke in May of 2021, the progression of his ALS accelerated and he entered hospice where he was able to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Jewel Hampe.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; his son, Chris and wife Andrea Hampe; daughter, Laura and husband Khristof Oborski; daughter, Shelley Hampe and husband Jery Wilson; daughter Lisa and husband Roland Russ; and son, Travis Hampe; and 14 grandchildren; his sister Donna and husband Roy Kubiak; and brother Dale and wife Julie Hampe.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hospice Sunset, or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
