Lola Maduell

Lola Legier Maduell, 99, of Clifton, Texas, native of New Orleans, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday, April 16, 2018. Mass will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 20, 2018 at Holy Angels Catholic Church.

Born in New Orleans in 1919, “Mere” spent most of her life drawing and painting until her last days. Her parents were Yvonne and Octave Legier of New Orleans. Her husband, Charles Rene Maduell, Jr., was deceased in 1980 and her son, Charles Rene Maduell III was deceased in 2013. Her sisters, Gloria Ledbetter and Sonia Schmidt, identical twins, also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her two daughters Andree Maduell and Rita Maduell Huie and her husband Roland of Norse, Texas; her grand daughters Nicolle Perniciaro and her husband Charles, Cherie Wagner, Lauren Elliott Deyris and her husband Pierre, and Alyssa Elliott; and her great grandchildren Charles and Nicolas Perniciaro, Kaylee McMillion, Kerry Knoblock and Arya Elliott Ramos. She also had two great great grandchildren. Her grandson, Richard Wagner is deceased.

Lola faithfully attended St. Dominic Church in New Orleans for over 40 years, Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville, Louisiana for 10 years, and Holy Angels Catholic Church in Clifton, Texas where a Mass was held on Friday, April 20, 2018. Another Mass and burial of her ashes will be held at a later date in New Orleans. In New Orleans, she was a member of the New Orleans Genealogical Society. Her pen & ink sketches of historical buildings are continually presented in each publication. A fine pen and ink artist, oil and acrylic painter, and colored pencil artist; she spent many a Saturday drawing famous Greater New Orleans locations. Some of these include St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. Louis Cathedral, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Lafitte’s Blacksmith shop, plantations, homes, and notable restaurants. Her book, entitled “French and Spanish New Orleans” (St. Charles Press) is inclusive of all of these buildings.

In New Orleans she would attend many opera’s and symphonies. Lola graduated from Rabouin Vocational School for art but her love of opera came from her parents who attended the Opera House in New Orleans that coincidentally burned down the year she was born. She and her husband began the Classical Music Society in the early 1950s. She also worked with her husband repairing x - ray and cardiology machines when the family had a business in the 1960s. She worked at the University of New Orleans library until retirement in her 60’s as a clerk typist, processing and enjoyed reading “every book that came through”. She left her house in Lakeview New Orleans several years before Hurricane Katrina, and lived with both daughters in Mandeville and Lacombe, Louisiana until moving to Texas to experience true country living, which she loved. Each day, she looked out at the sheep and chickens, sketching and painting flowers when she could. The family visited often and all were able to enjoy and
entertain her each Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, and birthdays since moving to Norse in 2014.
