At the age of 92, Milton Solberg received the call from his Heavenly Father, Sunday morning, October 7, 2018, following a short illness. Funeral services for Milton will be Thursday, October 11th at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Norse at 2 P.M. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Milton Lee “Speck” Solberg was born May 24, 1926, the only child of Milton L. “Bud” and Myrtle Solberg. He grew up on a farm in the Norse community. He was christened at Providence Hospital in Waco because of an emergency surgery he had at six weeks of age. He was confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Norse where he was an active member his entire life and served in many capacities over the years.
He attended elementary school at Turkey Creek and Norse schools and attended high school in Clifton, where he graduated in 1944. Immediately after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Drew, a cargo ship. After 2 years in the Navy, he returned to Norse and farmed and ranched with his dad. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad for a few years and then worked at Gearench Mfg. Co. for 35 years. He had numerous chances to move elsewhere but never did because of his love for the country life in Bosque County.
“Speck” married Earline Lassiter on June 1, 1947, in Cranfills Gap, Texas. To this union were born two children, son, Gerald Ray “Jerry” Solberg and daughter, Delores Kay “Dee Dee” Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, and son-in-law, Jimmy Johnson. He was especially fond of his grandchildren, Carl and Randy Solberg and Barry and Kim Johnson and his great-grandchildren, Brandon Johnson and Candace and Caden Solberg.
In 1948, he and Earline purchased the family farm from his grandmother, Josephine Solberg. They spent the rest of their lives on the farm, living in the house built by his grandparents in 1912. This was about a mile and a half from the farm where his parents lived. He and his dad enjoyed farming together and helping each other. He really enjoyed friends and family coming out to spend time on the farm. He loved to go swimming and often used the grandchildren as an excuse to go to Meridian State Park or Lake Whitney. He usually had his radio playing good traditional country music. He and Earline enjoyed dancing as often as they could.
He always had a smile and a cheerful attitude for everyone. He felt like he was blessed with a life he loved. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Memorials may be given to Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery.
