Oscar Hampe

April 1, 1920 — June 15, 2019

On June 15, 2019, at the age of 99 years, Oscar Hampe was called to come to paradise to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Clifton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church.

Oscar Otto Hampe was born April 1, 1920, in the Cayote community. He was the third of seven children born to Henry Hampe and Annie (Walsleben) Hampe. He grew up on the family farm in the Cayote community and attended school in Cayote.

He was brought by his parents for Holy Baptism as an infant on June 6, 1920, to St. John Evangelical Church in the Bismark community. In his youth, he received instruction in the Christian faith and confirmed his baptismal covenant on April 21, 1935, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in the Pleasant Hill community near Clifton. Oscar was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clifton at the time of his death.

On December 29, 1946 Oscar married Jeweldine Laverne Ickert at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Norse. Three children were born to them: Lloyd Wayne, Donna Kay, and Dale Allen. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage until Jewel died in 1993. In November 2014, Oscar broke his hip and moved into the Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home where he lived until his death. He did not want to be a burden to anyone. He wanted his family to live their own lives and not be burdened with taking care of him. Only days before he passed, he told family members that he knew they had things to do and to go do them and not worry about staying with him.

Oscar farmed and ranched his entire life. He purchased the farm that he grew up on from his parents in 1957 and he and Jewel lived there until they moved into Clifton in 1991. Even after “retiring,” he continued to look after his farm and livestock until his health failed. He enjoyed the weekly trip to the country when his son, Dale, would visit and take him to the farm.

Oscar had a strong, firm faith. He attended church and chapel regularly and was always active in his church. As his health failed he often said that he was ready to go. He was even disgusted after a recent severe illness that the Lord did not take him.

Oscar may be best remembered for his kind, gentle nature and his desire to make people laugh. He liked to tell jokes and pull jokes, never to embarrass anyone but just to make them laugh. He always joked about his April Fool’s Day birthday saying that when he was born his mother won an “Oscar.”

As a young man, he liked to hunt and fish. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always proud of his accomplishments. He and Jewel liked to dance and after her death, he continued to go to dances accompanied by his sister, Clara. He enjoyed playing marble games with friends and he especially enjoyed playing all types of domino games: forty-two, eighty-four, straight, and solitaire. He was part of the Immanuel Lutheran Men’s Club, where everyone wanted Oscar on their team when the eighty-four game started.

Oscar is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Annie Hampe; his wife, Jewel; his brother, Arnold Hampe; and sisters, Clara Zuehlke, Lydia Knust, and Laverne Adams.

He is survived by his son, Lloyd and wife, Donna, of Clifton; daughter, Donna and husband, Roy, of DeLeon; son, Dale and wife, Julie, of Bryan; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Darden, Wayne Kubiak, Clint Kubiak, Chris Hampe, Laura Oborski, Shelley Hampe, Lisa Russ, and Travis Hampe; 18 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Louise Oswald of San Saba and Alice Willmann of Clifton.

Pallbearers are James Dreyer, Lawrence Zuehlke, Wayne Kubiak, Clint Kubiak, Chris Hampe, and Travis Hampe.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home, or the charity of your choice.
