Patricia Lyon

Patricia Sommerfeld Lyon, 72, of Clifton passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Patricia Ann was born October 11, 1946 in Clifton, TX to R.F. and Ann (Urban) Sommerfeld, 13 years after her sister, Helen.

Pat was raised on a farm near Mosheim and attended Mosheim schools through 8th grade, then 2 years at Valley Mills High School. The family moved to Clifton in 1962 and Pat graduated from Clifton High School in 1964.

Pat attended Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University), Galveston College and graduated from UT Nursing School in Galveston in 1975. She worked in Public Health in Colorado and Nevada. She was Coordinator of Clinics for National Jewish Hospital in Denver and worked in psychiatry in Texas and Nevada. She also had experience in Intensive Care, Cardiology and miscellaneous nursing activities.

Pat graduated from University of Colorado School of Nursing Practitioner Certificate in January 1982. She graduated from UT San Antonio of Nursing in January 1986 with a Master of Psychiatric Nursing.

In 1986, she went to work for the State of Texas in Public Health as a supervisor for Region 1, responsible for 13 counties. In 1991, she moved to the Austin office working in Licensing and Certification doing hospital surveys and complaint investigations, focused on psychiatric facilities which were under investigation at the time. In 1996, Pat started an independent consulting business, which continued until 2006, when she retired, believing it temporary, to care for her mother at home. By 2013, when her mother passed away, Pat had developed health problems which escalated and kept her from ever returning to her beloved nursing.

Pat was twice married. She was married to Charles Smith in 1968 and Jay Lyon in 1980.

Pat was active in the Lutheran Church ELCA during her time in Clifton. She was a member at St. Olaf Lutheran in Cranfills Gap from 1986-2006 and joined Trinity Lutheran in Clifton in 2007. She was a member of the WELCA Synod Board and active in her local congregation.

Preceding her in death were her parents and sister, Helen Amundson. She is survived by niece, Deborah and husband, Dennis Jones, of Galveston; nephew, David Amundson and wife, Diane of Sugarland and 5 great nieces and nephews and their families, as well as, numerous cousins, extended family and friends.
