Rodney was born September 21, 1955 in Slaton to Bill and Jo Barner. He spent his younger years in Post and his Jr. year he went to school in Slaton for automotive mechanics. His senior year he moved to Clifton to work at the family business gas station and auto repair.
He met Renee Epley and they married on November 28, 1981. In 1984, they had their first child, Adam. In 1986, Rodney was involved in an accident that required countless surgeries, recovery and physical therapy. Through all of this he went back to school and in 1991, their second child Hayley was born.
In 1993, he received an associate’s degree in dental tech with a 4.0 grade average. Unable to gain employment, he continued on to get his peace officer license and was employed by Bosque County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy dispatcher. While employed at the sheriff’s department, he coordinated with the Bosque County SD, Waco P.D. and Ft. Hood to help rescue a school bus full of children that had been swept off a bridge in Valley Mills during a flash flood in 2002. For this, he received tele-communicator of the year. After retirement in 2004, he stayed home caring for his wife, children and grandchildren, Alexis and Avery Barner.
His passions included hunting, fishing and camping. He made it a point to travel and camp with his family every summer. His last vacation was visiting Hawaii.
