Sonja Henderson

February 16, 1942 — March 1, 2018

Sonja Sue Henderson, 76, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2018 at Midland Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Valley Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday, March 9, 2018 at Clifton Funeral Home.

Sue was born February 16, 1942 in Merkel to Lewis and Velma Horton. She grew up in Merkel and was a standout women’s basketball player for the Merkel Badgers. She graduated from Merkel High in 1960. She started her career in the insurance field where she was well respected in the industry and worked in the Abilene/Midland-Odessa/El Paso territory as an underwriter specialist. She started a new career with Texas Health and Human Services as manager of medical transportation. In January of 1968, she married James Henderson Jr., they were married 42 years until his passing in May of 2010.

Some of her hobbies included arts and crafts, antiquing, and gathering genealogy for the Morris, Sears, Horton, and Henderson family as well as the Norwegian settlers of Bosque County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

She is survived by her son, James A. Henderson of Midland; brother, Gary Stutz of San Angelo; brother-in-law, Morris Henderson of Valley Mills; sister-in-law, Martha Henderson of Denton; nieces, Heather and Micah; nephews, Jacob, Caleb, and Matthew; grandchildren, Alex Henderson and Kaitlyn Henderson; the Housen family and long time family friend, John Haggard.
