Vera Cooper

September 30, 1935 — March 20, 2018

Vera Ann Cooper, 82, of Clifton passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 23, 2018 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Norse with Pastor Bill Metting officiating. Burial will follow at Clifton Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Vera was the second of seven children born to John H. and Frances Tomena (Swenson) Cooper on September 30, 1935 in Loretto, Tennessee.

When she was 4 years old, Vera’s parents returned to Clifton, Texas. At the time she had an older sister, Hazel and two younger siblings-twins Doris and Johnny. In January of 1941, another set of twins were greeted-Faye and Ray. They were born at Goodall-Witcher Hospital. During the war years, Vera’s father would be moving the family from Clifton to Quemada, then Galveston, working at various military bases. In 1946, with the war ended, he was transferred from Galveston to Corpus Christi, Texas. That same year another brother, Robert, was born.

Vera started her schooling in Clifton and completed it in Corpus Christi, where she graduated from W. B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. Soon after graduation, she went to work for Southern Bell Telephone Company, where she worked for 38 years with perfect attendance before retiring in 1992. The following year, she moved, along with her sisters Hazel and Doris, to Clifton. After all, this was where her roots were. Their parents were born and raised in Bosque County. Both their maternal and fraternal grandparents were buried in Clifton. In 1994, Vera, Doris and Hazel became members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Vera did beautiful needlework, and used her talent to help with the church’s quilt for the annual quilt auction and to make quilts for the Lutheran World Relief quilts. She always looked forward to the annual Smorgasbord.

Vera was a very giving person. She always put others ahead of herself. When their mother became bedridden, Robert was just starting grade school. It was Vera that took over, making sure he had breakfast and making sure he was dressed and ready for school. Her motherly instincts extended to her nieces and nephews, whom she quickly bonded with.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; sister Hazel Cooper Wilkey and brother, John H (Johnny) Cooper. She is survived by two sisters, Doris Werner and Mildred Faye Pittman; two brothers Milton Ray Cooper and wife, Carrie, and Robert Cooper plus several nieces and nephews as well as many great nieces and nephews.
